Lawn Care and Maintenance for Sydney

Wondering about the best lawn care for Sydney and NSW? With seasonal conditions varying from hot and humid to wet and cold here are some simple guides.

Obviously your lawn care will depend on which grass you have – Buffalo, Zoysia, Couch and Kikuyu.

Buffalo Lawn Care for Sydney Climate

Mowing

Maintenance mowing of your Buffalo lawn – cut to 2cm-5cm in sun or light shade, or 5cm-7cm in heavier shade.

Mow your Buffalo turf every 5-10 days in warmer months, and every 3-6 weeks in colder months.

Fertilising

Buffalo lawn needs to be fed with fertiliser to remain strong and healthy.

Use a complete fertiliser in early April (Autumn) and early September (early Spring) and if you need a quick green-up use a fertiliser high in nitrogen to promote a lush green lawn.

Watering

Buffalo is drought tolerant once established – but, like all plants, needs water. Requirements will vary depending on environmental factors.

Be aware of a drying climate and water your Buffalo lawn accordingly.

Remember, infrequent deep watering of your Buffalo lawn promotes a healthy lawn and a strong deep-rooted system. Watering time is best in the early morning.

Laying

In NSW Buffalo grass can be installed at any time but note that during winter it will take longer to establish due to the cooler soil.

Zoysia Lawn Care for Sydney

Mowing

Mow your Zoysia lawn to 2cm-5cm in sun, or 5cm-7cm in shade – lower cuts will resemble a Couch lawn, higher cuts will resemble a Fescue lawn with longer leaf blades.

Mow every 2 weeks in warmer months, and every 3-8 weeks in colder months.

Fertilising

Fertiliser is recommended twice a year, with an additional application if the lawn is subject to high levels of wear and tear.

Watering

Zoysia is highly drought tolerant once established – but, like all plants, needs water.

Requirements will vary depending on environmental factors.

Be aware of a drying climate and water your lawn accordingly. Remember, infrequent deep watering of your Zoysia lawn promotes a healthy lawn and a strong deep-rooted system.

Watering time for your Zoysia turf is best in the early morning.

Laying

In NSW it is best to not lay Zoysia turf between the months of 15 May to 15 August.

Kikuyu Lawn Care for Sydney Climate

Mowing

Cut to 2.5cm-5cm every 7-10 days in the warmer months, and every 3-6 weeks in cold months.

Fertilising

Fertiliser is recommended twice a year: once in early April (Autumn) and once in September (Spring).

For a quick green-up of your Kikuyu – use a nitrogen fertiliser.

Watering

Kenda is drought tolerant once established – but, like all plants, needs water. Requirements will vary depending on environmental factors.

Be aware of a drying climate and water your Kenda lawn accordingly.

Remember, infrequent deep watering of your Kenda lawn promotes a healthy lawn and a strong deep-rooted system. Watering time is best in the early morning.

Laying

In NSW Kikuyu grass can be installed at any time but note that during winter it will take longer to establish due to the cooler soil.

Couch Lawn Care for Sydney

Mowing

Cut to 2cm-4cm every 7-21 days in the warmer months, depending on the frequency of fertiliser.

Fertilising

Fertiliser is recommended twice a year: once in early April (Autumn) and once in September (Spring).

For a faster-growing Couch lawn or to increase wear tolerance, simply fertilise more frequently.

Watering

Couch is highly drought tolerant once established – but, like all plants, needs water.

Requirements will vary depending on environmental factors. Be aware of a drying climate and water your Couch lawn accordingly.

Remember, infrequent deep watering of your Couch turf promotes a healthy lawn and a strong deep-rooted system. Watering time is best in the early morning.

Laying

In NSW Couch grass can be installed at any time but note that during winter it will take longer to establish due to the cooler soil.
